PUPILS at Kelly College took part in the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate Maths Challenge recently with good results. The challenges are lively, intriguing papers designed to stimulate interest in maths in large numbers of pupils. They are tests of reasoning and mental agility which can be taken without any special preparation or revision. The three levels cover the secondary school range eleven to 18 and attract more than 600,000 entries from over 4,500 schools and colleges. The junior and intermediate challenges are aimed at the top 35% of pupils in each year group. The senior challenge is suitable for all students aged 16-19 studying maths below university level. Enthusiastic younger pupils are also encouraged to enter the Challenges. Gold, silver and bronze certificates are awarded to 40% of participants nationally and the most successful participants at each level are invited to enter follow-on rounds. Tom Bury and Isaac Sturtridge were awarded gold medals. Tom was also the best in the school and Isaac was a Grey Kangaroo qualifier for a further round of challenges. Silver medals were awarded to James Macfarlane, Georgina Killingbeck, Katie Elliott, David Lunn, Rufus Hammerton, Kelvin Ng, Christian Richards, Alastair Quick and Max Byrne. Bronze medals were awarded to Giles Kisby, Christine Corlet, Anastasia Steed, Ryan Kingsley, Laura Sivyer, Rebecca Windermer, Hollie Mays, Milly Thomas, Darcey Ball, Sam Straughan and Cameron Carpenter-Warren.
