A KELLY College student has been offered a place in the South West Youth Orchestra.
After two years in the Devon Youth Orchestra, Sophie Wilson, a clarinettist from the upper sixth, has successfully auditioned for and been offered the place.
This is an exclusive opportunity to work and perform alongside world-class orchestral professionals from the internationally acclaimed Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. It is for exceptionally talented young musicians aged from 13 to 19 years from across the South West region.
The South West Youth Orchestra will host professional players to take sectional masterclasses and be participating members of the ensemble.
The challenging repertoire that will be prepared on the residential course will be Peter Schultorpe's Sun Song — celebrating the composer's 80th birthday, Bach arranged Holst's Fugue a la Gigue, Bartok's Hungarian Sketches and Copland's Appalachian Spring.
During the course there will also be a visit to a Prom concert given by the BSO at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The course, to be held at Bryanston in August, will culminate in a public performance at The Exchange, Sturminster Newton, Dorset.
