TAVISTOCK ladies? first hockey team on Sunday week took two teams to a seven-a-side tournament at Liskeard.

Tavistock 1 played seven matches and worked hard to create space and achieve goalscoring opportunities. Unfortunately they had to play mainly a defensive game with Sue Hornby, Rebecca Creasy and Steff Mills battling all the time.

The midfield play of Becky Wallace and Zoe Viggers could not be faulted and between these two Tavistock were a stronger team when ?zoning out? the opposition.

Tavistock 1 scored during the tournament when a good cross from Lisa Butler allowed Viggers to make her mark in the opposition?s D.

Judy Miller worked hard and on numerous occasions was able to take on two or three players and till get the ball past them.

In the last game of the tournament, Sue Hornby was definitely an outstanding player as she made numerous drives up the pitch and was a real threat to the opposition.

Tavistock 2 had to play the same teams as it was a round robin tournament. Sue Cork in goal made some excellent and brave saves.

Susannah Harland and Kath Collar were tireless in midfield and Fiona Dunn was able to deter any opposition from entering the D. Rachel Thorne was an excellent striker and scored numerous goals.

Tavistock 2 had the upper hand on most of the teams as they played in positions to almost ?textbook? style.

Becky Hutton had some excellent runs up the left wing and made good crosses into the D allowing Emma Bowden to run in and make a strong strike at the keeper.

Tavistock 2 came first in the whole pool section, which resulted in the team playing Bodmin in the semi-final. Unfortunately they were unsuccessful but felt they had made a good example of how strong the hockey ladies are in Tavistock.
