Tavistock 29

Torrington 7

AFTER easily beating Torrington earlier in the season the biggest threat to the home side was always going to be complacency. Unusually for Tavistock the team started the game well with Josh Sutton at scrum-half darting over from close range within the first ten minutes following good play by the forwards after a catch and drive from a lineout in the opposition?s 22.

Shortly afterwards the home side scored again through Rob Sleep following more strong play from the pack who were able to pretty much dominate their opponents for the majority of the match. Torrington rarely threatened the Tavy line and when they did errors cost them dearly. On one such occasion following a knock-on deep in Tavistock territory Neil Evans was able to fly-hack the ball up the entire length of the field to score under the posts with Sutton successful with the conversion.

The home side fell asleep in the last ten minutes of the half allowing Torrington to capitalise and score a try and conversion following a series of tap penalties from close range.

The second half was also pretty one-sided although Tavistock were only able to score two more tries, the first followed a neat kick by fly-half Evans which winger Doug Lloyd was able to collect to bundle over in the corner.

The final try of the afternoon followed a period of sustained pressure in the opponent?s half which resulted in Rob Weldon playing in the centres demonstrating his power in bouncing off any would-be tacklers to crash over the line.

Depsite the heavy conditions Tavistock played some enterprising rugby which should have been rewarded with more points but it was not really a problem as the game was by now won.

At times the overall team performance looked a bit disjointed but this was largely down to the number of recent changes due to injuries and illness.

But the victory means Tavistock are still in the hunt for promotion but must win all their remaining games.

This week the team are away to Tamar Saracens.
