WHILE many local shows have been swept away by the recent bad weather, one summer event this month looks set to be a resounding success. Sticklepath Village Fete, on August 18, has been revitalised this year to include some long-lost traditions as well as some new attractions. The Four Villages Tug-of-War will make a welcome return, with teams from Belstone, South Zeal, South Tawton and Sticklepath competing for a trophy generously donated by the Devonshire Inn. Visitors to the fete will also be entertained by Northlew Silver Band, and well-known local artist Tansy Rice will be on hand to draw portraits of pets. The duck race will run on a new and more spectator-friendly course, and all the old favourites will also be there, including the usual car boot sale, dog show, and side shows. There will be a barbecue and teas and cakes, while children?s races and maypole dancing together with pony rides should provide enjoyment for younger visitors. Other exhibits will include working static engines, face painting, and Sticklepath?s famous flower show with its magnificent displays in the village hall. Flower show entry forms and details of the various categories are available in the village shops of South Zeal and Sticklepath or telephone 52943. The traditional fell run, the Sticklepath Horseshoe, taking runners over a demanding nine-mile moorland course via Cosdon, will start at 1pm with the first runners scheduled to arrive just over an hour later. The fair begins at 12.30 pm. Further information can be obtained by calling the organiser on 01837 849123.
