FOLLOWING the disappointment of cancelling the previous race due to lack of wind, Weir Quay Sailing Club was back in action for the eighth of their Frostbite Series of dinghy races.
A cold easterly wind, tempered by strong gusts provided exciting sailing conditions on the River Tamar for the seven participating dinghies.
A flying start saw most of the fleet chase downstream to the first mark against wind and tide. Peter and Christopher Judd in their Heron captured the best winds and swept to the front of the pack, all the time being chased by Thomas Brook in one of the new club Picos and Steve Kirby in the Gull.
Not far behind, Brendon Seward was in hot pursuit in the other club Pico. Three laps of the course later and all the dinghies were still in close formation with frequent changes in the lead.
The two Enterprises eventually crossed the finish line ahead of the rest of the pack, but not far enough ahead to overcome their time handicap. All dinghies returned safely to shore and the crews retired to the club for well-earned refreshments and a rest.
Results (after allowing for handicap): 1. Gull, Steve Kirby: 2. Mirror, Tony Brooks: 3. Heron, Christopher and Peter Judd: 4. Pico, Brendon and Allan Seward: 5. Pico, Thomas Brooks: 6. Enterprise, Adrian Helps: 7. Enterprise, Richard Gould and Jeremy Hyde.
The next race is at 1.30pm on Saturday December 20.
