Tavistock 5

TAVISTOCK Squash Club's last match of the season saw them travel away to local rivals Westcountry.

Standing in at number 5 was Pete Walshe, who always seems to give a good performance when playing for his club. Pete faced an opponent he had played many times before and their games had always been closely fought.

His opponent made a number of unforced errors in the first two games, which saw Pete take them with relative ease.

In the third, a rather controversial game, Paul conceded the match but Pete persuaded him to continue and went on to lose the game. However, Pete won through in the fourth game to take the match 3-1.

Playing at number four, Tim Wallis took an early first game 9-0. Two slightly harder games followed both of which Tim took 9-4, to give Tim a 3-0 victory. This was a good display by Tim, who used cross-court drives with penetrating drop shots to put his opponent under constant pressure.

Stuart Cox, at number three, was involved in another titanic struggle in which he took the match 3-2. After losing the first game, Stuart was able to get back into the match with good long rallies. His superior fitness paid off and this was one of his better displays of the season.

Andy Gauler came up against an old warhorse, this was always going to be a tricky game to contest and to umpire. His opponent used to be a class player and was still able to show a range of classy shots. On this occasion, Andy kept his cool and won through without too many problems.

The last match saw Steve Tripp complete a tasty 5-0 win over their opponents. After cruising to 9-0 wins in the first two games, Steve did break into a sweat in the third but still took the match 3-0. This was a steady performance by the number 1 with very few mistakes.
