OKEHAMPTON cyclist Steve Sage was the only member of North Devon Wheelers who braved the cold, windy and muddy conditions on Sunday to participate in the final round of the South West cyclo-cross series at Marjons College, Plymouth. His decision to ride the hour long race was more than justified as he put in his strongest performance of the series to finish in second place and in doing so consolidated his fifth position in the overall series. Steve?s strong start meant he was able to stay in touch with the winner Roy Smith (Team Training FX) for the first part of the race. But after Roy opened up a slight gap on one of the tough muddy sections Steve was more than happy to consolidate his second place. As well as claiming second place Steve was also the only rider not to be lapped by the in form Smith. Steve?s ever improving form through the cyclo-cross season has caught the attention of the South West regional selectors, as he has been chosen as part of the six man senior team to represent the South West in the Inter Area Team Championships at Eastway, London on January 16 were he will be racing against some of the best cyclo-cross riders in the country.
