THE future of a spectacular event that attracts thousands of people from across the area is looking 'more hopeful' this week.

The organising committee behind the Sticklepath Fireshow had decided that unless four new committee members were found and more volunteers signed up to undertake key roles in the show's organisation, the planned 30th anniversary fireshow in November would not go ahead.

But following a public meeting on Monday evening the organising committee has recruited two new members, and volunteers to fill other roles, including wood collection, helping run the crafty capers art workshops for children, helping run the fireshow website, and assisting with odd jobs.

However, the committee is still hoping to find two more committee members, and further volunteers.

Janice Goodwin, the committee chair, said: 'We called the meeting to assess the future sustainability of the fireshow, because each year it is harder and harder.

'With health and safety, difficulties with finding and collecting wood, new regulations, it is hard.

'There is too much for the committee members left to carry on.

'What we need is the physical help to make calls, and do the jobs that need doing like that.'

Daisy Lewis, volunteer co-ordinator, said any help, big or small, could make the difference: 'We are looking for people who can give the odd hour here or there as well as those who can give more time. That is the link in the chain we've not had for a few years now.'

If the show was cancelled, it would see the end of one of the best firework celebrations in the country.

Held at the National Trust's Finch Foundry field, the event has attracted up to 3,000 visitors in the past, although 2012 saw a dip in visitor numbers.

As well as a firework display, there is a dramatic production, taking Guy Fawkes on an adventure before he ends up on the bonfire.

Following the meeting, the committee members were optimistic about the show's future.

Janice Goodwin said: 'It all looks very positive, and it is good to see so many people here. Things are now looking really good and I am very hopeful for the future of the fireshow.'

The committee will hold its next meeting on Monday, June 10 at 7.30pm in the Devonshire Inn in Sticklepath to make the final decision on whether the show will go ahead.

Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting and offer to help.
