CASTLE Drogo is set to be transformed into Sherwood Forest this summer, where the conflict between right and wrong, good and evil will be fought daily, as the Wolfshead Bowmen bring to life the story of Robin Hood. A spokesperson for the Bowmen said the group was one of England?s premier medieval societies. ?We are a company of archers united in common allegiance to the longbow, the backbone of the English armies during much of the medieval period,? the spokesperson said. The company comprises authentically-costumed archers who demonstrate the ancient art of ?shooting in the bow?. Their aim is to recreate aspects of medieval life, including an encampment, with tents and a controlled, off-the-ground cooking fire; the preparation of food to authentic, medieval recipes; period music and combat with various weapons. An integral part of their work is an hour-long archery display, spiced with lively, expert commentary. The exchange of dialogue, whilst conveying the importance of these times in English history, is kept lively and light with laughter being used as one of the most powerful teaching tools. They have appeared in many films and television productions, including the BBC TV series Ivanhoe and ITV?s The Dark Ages. The Castle and its beautiful surroundings will be venturing back in time to the medieval period each day between Monday, July 31 and Sunday, August 6. Visitors will be able to discover all about life at the time of Robin Hood with a range of activities for all the family from 11am ? 4pm each day.
