A WEST Devon restaurant has received a glowing report and a coveted star rating by the internationally respected food critic, Egon Ronay. The Horn of Plenty at Gulworthy has been acclaimed for the quality of its food and earns a warm recommendation in the new Egon Ronay Guide to the Top 200 Restaurants in the UK, published last Thursday. The restaurant, owned by Paul Roston and Peter Gorton, was inspected anonymously for the first Egon Ronay guide for eight years. In addition to the recommendation in the Egon Ronay?s RAC Guide 2005, the restaurant was awarded a one-star rating, which means it ?stands out among the best?. The guide says: ?Not easy to live up to the legendary Sonia Stevenson who firmly put the place on the gastronomic map, but Peter Gorton?s flair and consistency luckily is in evidence exemplified by local ewe?s cheese tartlet, duck salad with mango, king prawn tempura and the tenderest pot-roasted partridge. An original and reasonable wine list.? Egon Ronay said the Horn of Plenty was an excellent restaurant and richly deserved its position in the top 200. ?As always our inspection concentrated on the quality of food and we were very impressed with our meal there.? Masterchef Peter Gorton said he was ?thrilled? to have retained the star-rating which The Horn achieved in the last Egon Ronay guide to be published. ?This really is one of the major guides, he has been trusted as a food guru over the years and it?s so nice to be recognised in this way,? said Peter. He said The Horn did its best to support local producers and suppliers and the team would be striving to refine and improve its food and service to even higher levels in the future. ?It?s all about consistency, that?s what I have tried to achieve, and for people to go away having had a lovely meal that?s value for money,? said Peter.
