THE DEVON Royal British Legion (RBL) will hold its biennial County Rally at the Commando Training Centre for the Royal Marines at Lympstone on Sunday June 24. Open to all Legion members, their families and friends, the event is a wonderful opportunity for old comrades to meet and reminisce. The new Devon County Standard, carried by Standard Bearer James Stacey of the Okehampton Branch, will also be dedicated at this year's rally. Beginning at 11am, the event will provide the opportunity to wander around a large variety of static displays, many with a military bias. During the afternoon, demonstrations and performances will take place in the main arena. These will include a performance by the Band of the Royal Marines, an unarmed combat demonstration, and a parachute jump by members of the Royal Marines and the Royal Navy. The Bideford Youth Pipe Band will also give a performance, while the Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps will provide attractions for younger visitors. There will be a number of tents offering a wide range of refreshments. Towards the end of the afternoon, there will be the traditional muster of the Branch Standards and the rally will end at about 4.30 pm with the 'Beating Retreat' ceremony, performed by the Band of the Royal Marines. The Okehampton Branch of the RBL hopes that many members, their families and friends will want to attend this event and has arranged for a coach to leave Martin's Newsagent on Fore Street at 10.30 am. The cost will be £2.50 for Legion members and £5 for non-members. Members are asked to register on the list posted in the Okehampton Social Club as soon as possible. Security control on the Royal Marines Base requires that photographic identity (e.g. a passport or driver's licence) must be carried by all visitors on the day.
