TAVISTOCK squash team's first fixture of the new season was at home against Newton Abbot, a team recently promoted from the division below.

Without two of their regular players Tavistock acquitted themselves well taking the match four ties to one.

Playing at number five, Adrian Bower, a useful new addition to the team, played a consistent level to beat Derick Wilson of Newton Abbot 3-1.

On the other court, Pete Walshe, playing at number four, came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in what was a titanic struggle for the schoolteacher.

The number three string for Tavistock, Pete Middleton, found the going difficult after the summer off, going down 3-0 to Kevin from Newton Abbot in what was their only win of the night.

Tavistock number two string, Tim Wallis, sealed the match by taking a 3-1 victory over his Newton Abbot opponent in what was a tighter contest than the score suggests.

It was left to Andy Gauler, playing at number one, to conclude what was a convincing win by taking his match 3-1 against a fit Barry Johnson from Newton Abbot, who made Andy earn his victory.
