TAVISTOCK Town Council has voted in favour of putting together a package of flagpoles, gazebos and plant containers and power supply for Bedford Square, despite opposition from some councillors — one of whom declared that 'we don't need another Safeway in the square'.

The proposal had come from the town's properties committee, but at last week's town council meeting several councillors, who had opposed the original square scheme, were against any permanent alterations.

They feared they might make any reversion to the original layout difficult to achieve and that it would alter the character of the area.

Cllr Pat Warne said the scheme would not be adding to the enhancement, but would be 'mocking what we had before'.

'We have lost the plot,' Cllr Warne said, adding: 'We don't need another Safeway in the square'.

But Cllr Ken Sanders believed they were 'getting the plot at last' and that, together with the extra attraction of the farmers' markets, they were 'making it more of a market town'.

The proposition to draw up a package to be forwarded as a bid under the Market and Coastal Town Initiative scheme was passed by 9 votes to 5 after the word 'portable' was added to the features.
