MORE than 1,300 people participated in the wide range of activities on offer in Okehampton earlier this month as part of the OCRA-organised Sportsweek. The finale of the week of events was a series of activities in Simmons Park on Sunday, July 16, including the popular 5-a-side football tournament. The winners in the 5-a-side football competition were Dave Elson Love Machine who beat Hatherleigh FC in the final. On the winning side, were Dave Wills, Chris Wills, Phil Evans, James Williams, Tom Powell, Rob Clarke and Matt Mortimore. Hatherleigh?s team contained Darren Moore, Sam Wollacott, Matthew Wonnacott, Will Chapman, Michael Cooper, Dean Rice and Olly Bedford. In the woman?s football tournament, Sue?s Young Guns swept aside the opposition, beating a team from Exeter City. The team consisted of Sue Yelland, Hillary Lee, Sandra Orsden, Siobhan Aslett, Michelle Vaughan and Naomi Wilkins. The winner of the Sportsweek squash competition was Arnie Searle, the runner up was Phil Allen. In the shield competition, Dave Harwood won with Paul Love as runner up. In the youth section, Paul Winthorpe won and runner-up was Jack Stanbury. The rounders contest was won by the OCRA team. The skate and bike session at the skatepark on Saturday, July 15 again proved very popular with young people. Around 60 youngsters came along and enjoyed the freestyling and music, Stuart Lord of OCRA said some of the skaters at the event were of a very high standard. Plymouth Albion coach and former England player Graham Dawe held rugby coaching sessions as part of the week. Stuart said this year?s programme had expanded to include salsa and other forms of dance, drama activities and a range of activities for the disabled users of the Puzzle Tree and the Leaze centres. Stuart said the eighth Okehampton Festival of Sport and Fitness had been another great success. ?Year in, year out, it gets better and better, with more and more people participating,? he said.
