Okehampton Netball League

THE last matches of the season were played on Tuesday April 6.

In division I Speedwells played Cheriton Flyers in a closely fought match. Speedwells were without one of their regular shooters and had to bring in a reserve to play in defence. The match was played in good spirit and Speedwells went on to win 50 goals to 40.

Players of the match: Beth Stephens for Speedwells, Katie Chaffey for Cheriton Flyers.

Falcons played Dodgers.It was always going to be a tough match for Dodgers against the league leaders, but they started well and the scores were close at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Dodgers? run of bad luck continued and their Goal Defence had to leave the game due to an injured ankle. Dodgers fought hard with only six players but Falcons won 44 goals to 27.

Players of the match: Hilary Lee for Falcons, Ali Keener for Dodgers.

Also in division I: Magpies 43, Hatherleigh II 21.

In division II Red Devils played 7 UP. This was a well-played match with Kayleigh Webber standing in at Goalkeeper having a good game. The final score was Red Devils 19, 7 UP 30.

Players of the match: Lynda Cann for Red Devils, Kayleigh Webber for 7 UP.

The school teams of Shooting Starz and Helz Angels both had games that unfortunately brought them defeat, but they have played excellent netball throughout the season and maintained a positive and cheerful attitude. Together with the other young team Pretzels they should be congratulated on their mature and sporting attitudes.

Results: Jesters 60, Helz Angels 4. Players of the match: Jo Grout for Jesters, Helen Cooper for Helz Angels.

Shooting Starz 8, Groovy Chicks 35. Players of the match: Natasha and Jess Day for Shooting Starz, Leanne Drew and Emma Gibbs for Groovy Chicks.

It has been a good season with some excellent new players to the league and the presentation of trophies will take place on May 18 at the annual meeting in the sixth form common room of Okehampton College. The league looks forward to welcoming all teams to attend.

l There has been some interest shown in a junior netball league for girls in Years 7,8 and 9 and it is hoped to be able to start this in September to run alongside the existing league. There will be a meeting for anyone interested on Tuesday April 27 at 7.30pm at Okehampton Rugby Club.
