MORE than 200 people enjoyed the music of the Plymouth Congress Hall Band of the Salvation Army in Tavistock Meadows on Sunday.
Old and well-loved hymns such as ?Onward Christian Soldiers? and ?Guide me, O thou great Redeemer? as well as more modern worship songs saw many joining in the singing.
The afternoon was arranged by Tavistock Area Christians Together, as was a further event with the band, a ?Songs of Praise? in St Eustachius Church, in the evening.
At that service Ian Silcox, chairman of TACT, welcomed Major Margaret Goulding, the new leader of the Tavistock branch of the Salvation Army, to the town on behalf of members of the group.
Mr Silcox said the afternoon had been blessed with sunshine and the Meadows had been alive with the music of a brass band again.
?It is hoped the occasion will be the first of many such open air musical events, with the town council restoring the bandstand and its surroundings to their past glory for the benefit and enjoyment of many people, both local and visitors,? he said.
