SONGWRITER Helen Chadwick will meet singers in Okehampton tonight (Thursday) as they practise for the Wren Trust's 2000 Voices celebration being held in Plymouth this summer.

The songwriter is gathering information on local legends, landscapes and history as expressed by the singing group, which will become material for a specially commissioned song.

The group recently held its first meeting and will continue to have monthly singing days until the 2000 Voices celebration at Plymouth Pavilions on July 16.

Any local singers are invited to come along.

Musical director Paul Wilson said: 'Bits of six choirs turned up and promised to bring the whole choir with them next time — it was stupendous!'

The 2000 Voices celebration will take the form of six large choirs from around different regions of the country, coming together to form one enormous choir.

The Wren Trust, an Okehampton-based folk arts charity, is organising the project with a Millennium Festival grant of around £20,000.

Tonight's meeting takes place at Fairplace Church between 7pm and 9pm — the meeting is free and open to everyone.
