THE RAF Harrowbeer Interest Group (HIG) have a busy April ahead of them with an exhibition, guided walks, a talk, and film show, all coinciding with the launch of a new book on the history of the airfield.
The book, 'A History of RAF Station Harrowbeer Revisited', is based on a 1980s publication originally written by Dennis Teague and now brought up to date by HIG member Stephen Fryer. It will be officially 'launched' at a talk and film show on the airfield in Buckland Monachorum Village Hall on Saturday April 10 at 7.30pm.
Before that, the airfield exhibition will be at the 'Harrowbeer Weekend' organised by Knightstone Tea Rooms, Yelverton, over the Easter weekend from Saturday to Monday. On view will be photographs, documents and artefacts about RAF Harrowbeer. People can join a free guided walk with HIG volunteers around the airfield at 1pm on each afternoon. The exhibition will then be on view at the village market and coffee shop in Buckland Monachorum Village Hall on the morning of April 10 from 10am to noon, prior to the talk and film show in the evening.
RAF Harrowbeer was operational between 1941 and 1946, and was eventually demolished in the 1960s following the decision it would not become a 'new' Plymouth Airport. The only remains are the taxiways and aircraft bays that are virtually as they were 65 years ago.
The group are still keen to hear from any airfield staff, or from families who lived in the airfield's huts in the 1960s and 70s.
