OKEHAMPTON and District Tennis Club will hold its annual meeting at the Conservative Club on Monday March 10 starting at 8pm.

With the recent announcement of the successful lottery bid awarded to Okehampton, this year?s meeting will be important in determining the future of the club.

Four new floodlit courts will help promote tennis in the town in the coming years; but for the immediate future some major decisions need to be made to ensure the club continues to meet its sporting commitments.

The club has a clear development plan to carry forward the expansion of tennis in Okehampton and surrounding villages. There has always been a commitment to junior tennis within the club and closer links will be developed with Okehampton College to promote the youth element.

The club also recognises the need to encourage older players and with the new facilities plans will be put in place to attract adults who want to pay tennis as part of keeping fit.

In the short term, particularly while the new courts are being constructed, difficult decisions may have to be made about tennis provision in the town

The club needs to continue to provide social and friendly tennis and in addition it has made a commitment to maintain its four league teams for the coming season and it is hoped an extra junior team will play this year.

In co-operation with their partners in the lottery bid, the tennis club looks forward to fulfilling these commitments and laying the foundation for a further rejuvenation of tennis in the community.
