NEARLY one hundred serving soldiers will be taking part in the Remembrance Sunday parade through Okehampton this Sunday.

This year's Remembrance parade will include two regular Army contingents consisting of approximately 50 soldiers from 23 Engineer Regiment from Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire and 42 Engineer Regiment from Newbury, Berkshire.

Members of these units were involved in the recent conflict in Iraq and those on parade are currently undergoing military training on Dartmoor.

The Okehampton branch of the Royal British Legion together with the two contingents of Royal Engineers, the local Army Cadet Force and the Air Training Corps as well as members of other community groups will be taking part in the traditional Remembrance parade.

The parade will start at 10.30am from the town hall and march to the Parish Church where a short ceremony will be held at the town's War Memorial.

After the 'Last Post' at 11am, two minutes silence will be observed to remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in two world wars and in other armed conflicts since.

At approximately 12noon, after the church service, the parade will march back to the town centre and reform in front of the town hall in Fore Street.

The Town Mayor will then be invited to meet those on parade, following which the band will play the national anthem.

Peter Williams, secretary of the Okehampton branch of the Legion, said: 'The Okehampton Training Camp began in the latter part of the 19th Century.

Ever since that time, the British Army has had a long and proud association with Okehampton.

'Thus, the participation of so many soldiers on this particular occasion here in Okehampton at the end of yet another conflict is especially appropriate.'
