I HAVE this week written to Devon County Council Local Services officer, Mike Parnell, and to the Environment Director, Edward Chorlton, on behalf of the 500-strong Dartmoor Society to request formally that the works carried out on the Whitchurch-Grenofen road at a cost of more that £26,000 should be removed entirely at the earliest opportunity.

We believe that the works:

l are a significant traffic hazard and likely to cause a serious accident

l are a totally unjustified and urbanising modification of an ancient and attractive rural Devon road

l are a totally unjustified expenditure of public money

l do nothing to reduce speeds through the built-up area of Whitchurch village.

LETTERS concerning the rural gateway are becoming rather boring by their very repetition but I feel compelled to write another letter on this subject.

I have discussed the gateway with a great number of people and have found only one person who supports it. I believe that an overwhelming majority of townspeople share my view that the completed work is both ugly and infinitely more dangerous to road users than was hitherto the case.

I write as a cyclist and walker as well as a car driver. Despite all the money spent, it remains a nightmare to exit Priory Close, Chollacott Lane etc and I just cannot understand why 'sleeping policemen' have not been introduced.

As one of very many dissatisfied local voters, I would like to know what our elected representatives are doing to carry out the wishes of the electorate. I would also like to know who is accountable for this fiasco and whether they have considered resigning from their employment or elected position.

I do not see why we have to put up with financing this sort of mistake and I wish to see the road restored to its previous attractive and perfectly safe form.

MY husband and I have just returned from six months abroad to find that during our absence prehistoric man has been at work on the back road from Whitchurch to Horrabridge.

A ceremonial stone row seems to have appeared which to my knowledge, is not listed in the great works of Hemery or Worths.

I was concerned about its appearance as I had the misfortune to meet a large vehicle at one of the passing places and as I value the paintwork on my vehicle, did not want to get too close to its meticulously chiselled granite corners.

Our beautiful country lane has vanished and in return we have been given a dangerous eyesore.
