MORE than 200 people came to watch and support two local businesses go head to head at Crowndale Football Pitch last Sunday, in aid of a local boy with autism. Tavistock Tyres played The Union Inn in the seven-a-side football match for Paul Lewis?s Son-Rise Programme ? resulting in a 6 - 2 win to The Union. After the match, everyone moved on to the Red and Black Club for a special themed Pumpkin Party. The teams were presented with medals for their participation, and the winning side was awarded the Son-Rise Cup. The party included a guess the weight of a pumpkin competition, which was correctly guessed as 66lb 11oz by Simon Allen from Tavistock Tyres. The children got into the swing of Hallowe?en by donning fancy dress, and there was a raffle. There was also an auction of a signed football, glove and picture, donated by former England World Cup number two goalie Peter ?The Cat? Bonetti, who was keeper between 1966 and 1970. Ultimately more than £1,500 was raised from the event including donations from local people and businesses ? the amount is still rising. Sheena, Paul Lewis?s mum, said: ?The day was great. So many came to support us ? the amount of people who were there was amazing.? Allen, Paul?s dad, said: ?The best bit for me was to see the winning side, the Union lads, drinking the toast in the Son-Rise cup for Autism. Already they have called for a re-match next year.? Allen expressed thanks to everyone who helped raise money for the event and to all the shops who donated prizes.
