AS secretary of Tavistock RBL I need to record how honoured all service families have been by the numbers and sincerity of people attending the service of Remembrance on Sunday November 8.

It was a typical dull November day with rain clouds threatening at any moment, however it did not deter the many hundreds gathered to respect those who have given lives and limbs to protect us.

United in remembering the horrors of war in the cause of justice and freedom, in an attempt to establish harmony throughout the world, everyone came to honour the dead and injured —no matter how mistaken the cause.

As the Last Post was sounded my mind reflected on the third verse of Laurence Binyon's poem 'For the Fallen'.

'They went with songs to the battle,

They were young, straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.

They were staunch to the end against the odds uncounted,

They fell with their faces to the foe.'

Then followed the two minutes silence, all gathered united in remembrance of justice war and heroism, acknowledging all that we believe in, to pray for peace through-out the world - that those who had died had not died in vain.

The RBL must thank once again: Mr B Wilde of Chilcotts solicitors for allowing the Stannary Band to park their cars in his car park, to Robert and Rosemary Dobbie for printing the order of service sheets, to John Bollacot who provided the P/A system as he has done for that last 33years, to the town mayor and council for arranging the cleaning of the war memorial and closing the Guildhall car park, to the police for their co-operation, to Michael Brierly, priest-in-charge, and his chaplancy team, all of whom gave their services free of charge.

Thanks also to the Stannary Band for another brilliant performance and, of course, to all who took part in and attended the Service of Remembrance.

Finally the RBL must thank the street collectors for selling poppies in adverse weather conditions on November 6 and 7 — Well done.

MAY I through your paper, express my grateful thanks to all who contributed towards the £1,657.34 collected, in the Lamerton area, for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal this year: the generous givers, the willing helpers and, not least, your newspaper for its support.

Lamerton

ON behalf of the Lamerton branch Royal British Legion, I would to thank the residents of the Lamerton area for their generous response to our poppy collections.

The amount collected was in excess of last year's.

Remembrance Day was Commemorated with a short service at the war memorial, followed by an excellent, well attended service at the church. Thanks to all concerned.

Last but by no means least thanks to Cefyn for his excellent rendition on the bagpipes.
