SIX candidates have thrown their hats into the ring for the vacant seat on Tavistock Town Council ? forcing an election which will be held on Thursday July 21. The seat on Tavistock?s North ward became vacant after the county council elections in May, when Liberal Democrat Cllr Roy Connelly, who retained his seat on the county, announced his resignation from the town council. Standing for the seat are Marjorie Corner, Independent, a former town councillor and mayor of Tavistock; David Farrant, standing as a Local Conservative; Geri Laithwaite, Independent, a co-ordinator of the newly formed Tavistock Fairtrade Initiative; Harry Smith, a resident of the North ward and former deputy town mayor; Tim Wiggans, Independent, who lives in Deer Park Road, and Alex Wood, Liberal Democrat, currently chairman of governors at Tavistock College. The polling station for Tavistock North will be the Methodist Church in Chapel Street. There are 17 seats on the town council, which is currently made up of eight independent, four Liberal Democrat, three Conservative and one Labour councillor, plus the vacant seat.
