IN a tense match Tavistock were knocked out of the bowls quarter-final of the Farley Trophy by old rivals Plymouth Sir Francis Drake.
After losing the two singles the match was squared when Mike Allen, helped by Pat Sykes and Brian Preece, won the triples and Colin Tremaine and Der Saunders won the pairs.
It was left to the rink of Roy Northam, Sandy Sanders, Lionel Sims and Tony Coombs to try to win the match. Despite being well behind at the midway stage they came back to be in contention on the last end.
Needing four shots to win they just failed to remove the opposition's second wood which would have ensured victory.
The following evening, Civil Service Sports Association were beaten in a league match thanks to a resounding win by Mike Allen and his rink of Rob Bowhay, Phil Jury and Brian Preece.
The ladies had a resounding league win over Plymstock Birds, winning both rinks and picking up full points. Marion Allen's rink of Betty Browse, Gill Saunders and Marlene Paramor were the top scoring rink.
Unfortunately, the mixed friendly against Topsham had to be abandoned after only two ends due to the conditions underfoot.
On Saturday four rinks travelled to Totnes, winning on all four rinks, Betty Browse's rink of Gordon Northey, Audrey Northam and Ernie Piper being top scorers.
On Sunday, Betty and her rink of Victor Doidge, Audrey Northam and Brian Preece were the only winning rink at home to Bradworthy.
