LOCAL singing group the Tavy Tars are holding an evening of nautical songs from around the world to raise money for some pupils from Tavistock College to experience the thrill of sailing on a tall ship. Entitled ?Around the world with the Tavy Tars?, the evening will consist of shanties, ballads, a duologue and instrumentals. The proceeds will go towards the cost of the sail training experience with the Tall Ship Youth Trust for the youngsters. On board they will join one of three watches, under the expert guidance of a watch leader. They will learn how to set the sails, handle the ropes, take the helm, keep a proper lookout and be involved in all the other varied tasks that keep a Tall Ship sailing. The Tall Ships Youth Trust owns two 60-metre square-rigged ships, the Stavros S Niarchos and Prince William. They are operated by Tall Ships Ltd., one of the charity?s subsidiaries, and work 12 months of the year both around the UK and abroad, offering Tall Ship Adventure Sailing Holidays. The concert is in Tavistock Parish Rooms in Plymouth Road this Saturday, May 20 at 7.30pm. Admission is £4 for adults and £2 for 16s and under. Tickets are available on the door or from John Collacott at Tavistock College, or by phoning 01822 610074. Bring your own food and drink; soft drinks will be available.
