CALLINGTON Singers will be joined by choirs from Barsbuttel and Guipavas for their 30th anniversary concert at Menheniot Church on October 26.
The singers enjoy long-standing friendships with the other choirs and it was these friendships which helped to begin the process of the official twinning of these communities with Callington in the early 1980s. The concert will include music from all three choirs in joint performance and as individual groups.
The programme will include pieces by Mozart, Rutter, Verdi, Saint-Saens and many composers. Of particular interest is the international début of a piece which has been composed in honour of the Callington Singers 30th anniversary by noted composer Andrew Downes.
Mr Downes' daughter Paula, an internationally renowned soprano in her own right, will be performing several pieces, including items by local composer, the late Peter Scott-Wigfield.
The Callington Singers received a Cornwhylen Cross Award at the September 2011 Cornish Gorsedh for musical performances which include a religious element. The citation read: 'From their inaugural meeting in St Mary's Church, Callington in 1983 the singers have become well known beyond the South East, venturing over the Tamar, the Irish Sea and the Channel, singing in some of the world's most famous cathedrals. The choir has enhanced Cornwall's status as a Celtic nation with music in its heart'.
