THE third round of the South West of England Open Winter Foursomes competition, sponsored by DHS Tool Supply Company, Plymouth, was played at Yelverton Golf Club on Sunday. Local assistant professional Simon Wood, with partner Martin Petherick, was first out, and first back, within two hours, having defeated their opponents, Hele Park professional David Jeffs and David Henson (Stover) 7 and 6. Simon's boss, Yelverton professional, Tim McSherry, also won but by the closest of margins, one shot, against fellow club members Tim Shobrook and John Chapman. One of the tightest matches was between Ashley and Martin Moon and Karl and Laura Eastwood. The Moon brothers were three up at one stage, but the Eastwoods fought back over the back nine, and three consecutive pressure putts from the 18th gave them victory at the 20th. Karl needed to hole a 20 foot putt to stay in the match on 18, the 19th was halved in 3s after a 12 foot putt, and Laura canned a 45 foot putt from the edge of the second green to finally secure victory. Players from Bigbury fared well, with father and son A Willacy and D Willacy both having success in two different teams. A Pitcher and Richard Woods beat the professional from the Warren, Richard Daly and his partner C Penhaligon 1 Up, and Neil Pitcher, partnered by David Willacy, beat a Yelverton pair 3 and 2. The last match also saw an inspired comeback and drama on the last hole. Adam Bridgewater and Joe Yorke were 3 up with 5 to play, but lost the next two holes to fellow Yelverton members David Wright and Nick Davis. David Wright canned putts on 15th and 17th to keep the match alive, but Joe Yorke chipped-in on the 18th to seal victory 2-up. The fourth round, and the Plate competition qualifying round will be played at Yelverton on Sunday December 3, prior to taking a six-week break for Christmas and New Year.
