SHOPPERS at a Callington supermarket got a chance to meet their MP and donate to the local foodbank recently.
Sheryll Murray, MP for South East Cornwall, joined a team of volunteers to hold a collection on behalf of Callington Foodbank.
Mrs Murray said: ‘Foodbanks play a vital role at times when people find they have a temporary crisis, but particularly at this time of the year. I would like to praise Tesco for the fantastic support they have always given, and continue to give, to the foodbank and the wider community of Callington.’
Customers were given a special shopping list on entering the store and were asked to pick up an item of food such as long-life milk, cereal, tinned foods and tea and coffee before donating it at the end of their shopping trip. The food will now be distributed by the foodbank to people in times of need.
Foodbank co-ordinator Mark Haydon thanked the people of Callington for their generosity. He said: ‘Yet again they have responded to the needs of those who find themselves in crisis. Even the smallest donation goes a long way to helping someone else feel better. As one company once said, every little helps!’
Tesco will be topping up the value of the donations by a further 30%.
Tesco fresh trading manager Paul Dunn said: ‘The Callington community has once again excelled themselves with their generosity. We would like to thank Mrs Murray, our customers and the volunteers for their outstanding support.’
