A SERIES of special services at the 'Blackdown' benefice is being held this Sunday to show support for West Devon's crisis-hit farmers.

The NFU and the Churches Rural Support Group have worked with the Rev Ian Sykes, Rector of Mary Tavy, Peter Tavy, Brentor and Lydford churches, all situated around Blackdown, to produce an order of service for Rogation Sunday.

Barbara Weeks, warden at Lydford's St Petroc church, said: 'Rogation Sunday has been appointed by the Christian church for prayers for the farming community and the success of their crops, upon which we all depend.

'This year, with many, if not all farmers wondering if they have any future, the support which we give through care and prayer is of even greater importance.'

Mr Sykes added: 'We know we can't change the economy, but we can be caring towards our fellow human beings and sympathetic to our farmers, supporting them with our thoughts and prayers.'

The short service takes place this Sunday May 28 at Peter Tavy 9.30am, Brentor Christchurch 9.45am, Lydford 11am, Mary Tavy 11.15am and St Michael's on Brent Tor at 6pm.

Peter Tavy Methodists are holding an open-air rogationtide service at Smeardon at 3pm.
