OKEHAMPTON and District Tennis Club enjoyed a busy fixtures programme last week with four matches being played by the senior teams.

On Monday evening Cranford men's E team visited Simmons Park and the home club's B team achieved a creditable 3-1 victory fielding a team combining youth and experience from 18 to 60!

Graham Gale and Jeremy Stephens won their matches 7-5, 7-5 and 6-4, 6-4. David Page and Alan Holman found the opposition a little more difficult. However, they ensured an Okehampton win by defeating their first opponents 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 and losing their second match 2-6, 3-6.

The men's A team continued their league programme when they played Civil Service A team from Exeter on Wednesday at Simmons Park, losing 3-1. Paul Love and Phil Povey won 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 and lost 0-6, 3-6.

Regular first team player Jerry Stephens was partnered by Jon Allin for the first time this season, following the absence through injury of team captain Graham Mitchell. Jerry and Jon lost 2-6, 2-6 and 1-6, 1-6.

On Wednesday the ladies B team travelled to Newton Abbot and were unfortunate to meet opponents in fine form, losing 4-0.

Beth Carter and Beth Stephens lost their matches 5-7, 2-6 and 1-6, 1-6, while Teresa Sanderson and Penny Holman, playing together for the first time this season, lost their matches 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2, 7-6.

The men's B team travelled to North Wyke on Friday to play their local rivals. Jeremy Stephens and Graham Gale were unable to maintain their Monday evening success and although taking their opponents to 3 sets lost 4-6, 5-7, and 6-4, 2-6, 3-6.

Club chairman David Carter, playing for the first time this season, partnered Alan Holman and they lost their matches 2-6, 4-6 and 3-6, 3-6.

On Saturday July 8 the club continues its support of Okehampton's Sports Week with a fun morning of tennis for the under 11s. Sessions will be held where younger players will have the opportunity to develop their basic tennis and ball skills. The cost will be £1 per hour.

In the afternoon, the club will hold a mixed doubles tournament for the town mixed doubles trophy starting at 2pm in Simmons Park at a cost of £3 per person.
