THE next step forward has been taken in a move to create an active voice for senior citizens in Devon — and two Okehampton residents are taking a primary role in the task. The formation of a Senior Council for Devon (SCfD) moved closer on February 20 , when a constitution was approved by the Assembly of Senior Councils for Devon. This was the first time the assembly, made up of 60 representative members from senior council groups across Devon, had met. The two elected representative members for Okehampton are Mary Morse and Ken Crawford. Mr Crawford said: 'The SCfD aims to be a focus for the voice of people aged over 50 in policy development and service planning. 'It aims to realise the potential of people in later life as a creative and active resource for the community.' Initial funding has come from the Department of Works and Pensions and from Devon County Council. A commitment to provide core funding for an initial three year period has also been made by the county council and the Devon Primary Care Trust. The next step will take place on March 18 when ten directors of the SCfD will be elected. Prior to this, the Okehampton branch of the senior council will be holding a meeting at 10.30am on Tuesday March 11 at the Ockment Centre. Mr Crawford added: 'If you are over 50 and interested in shaping your future then you are more than welcome to join us. 'Membership is free and you can get involved as much as you want. 'If you just want to be kept informed then that is okay, but if you want to get more involved, then there will be opportunities to take part at a local and county level. 'We are already taking part in West Devon's strategic partnership discussions on housing, support services, well-being, environment and economy. 'Our voice is being heard.'
