Devon Cricket League
Yelverton Bohemians seconds
v Clyst St George seconds
DESPITE the threat of rain, the game started on time, Clyst winning the toss and asking Yelverton to bat.
Openers Andy Taylor and skipper Jason Degg punished some loose bowling in an opening stand of 72 off 18 overs before Taylor was caught in the covers off the bowling of Coe for 18. Degg was joined in the middle by Paul Farnham and the pair carried on scoring freely, raising the 50 partnership off just 7.3 overs and the 100 partnership off just another 6.3 overs.
Farnham fell with the score on 177 for a well played 56, but Degg carried on the carnage, getting to his hundred (with 18 boundaries) in the 37th over.
A few wickets fell cheaply to the persevering Clyst bowlers as Yelverton looked for quick runs, but Degg and wicketkeeper Jez Croymosan (29 no) put on an unbeaten 65 for the seventh wicket as the Bohemians closed their innings on 295-6, Degg carrying his bat for a magnificent unbeaten 146.
Clyst got off to a fairly comfortable start, with K Coe and skipper C Doe putting on 34 for the first wicket before Coe fell to the bowling of Chris Pearson with a diving catch in the covers by Dave Scott. Doe went with the score on 64 caught by Gerry Keen off the bowling of Paul O'Hanlon, and he was soon followed by D Tackle caught behind by Croymosan off Pearson. O'Hanlon (2-11) pouched a second wicket caught by Degg at Mid-off to leave the score 76-4 at the half way point of the innings.
P Richardson and P Laverick took the attack to the Yelverton bowlers with a stand of 91 for the fifth wicket. Laverick hampered by a groin injury required the assistance of a runner, but he was largely redundant as he hit several sixes before falling for 48 caught behind by Croymosan off the bowling of Scott.
With the score on 162-5 in the 38th over a draw looked the most likely result, but Tony Carter (3-32 off 12) took three quick wickets, including Richardson for 53 to leave Clyst on 191-8. Pearson (4-41 off 10) bowled the last two overs and in his first, trapped Browning lbw and with the first ball of the last over bowled Rosser to leave the Bohemians winners by 102 runs.
Yelverton seconds (20 points) beat Clyst St. George II (7) by 102 runs
This week the Bohemians seconds are away to Shobrooke Park, near Crediton.
Devon Cricket League Second XI B Division Yelverton seconds v Chudleigh seconds
YELVERTON XI began their 50th anniversary and opening league game but conditions were such that both sides were reduced to 42 overs.
Yelverton's opening bowlers Geraint Heath and Tony Carter soon hit their line and length and run scoring was predictably slow on the lively surface.
At drinks Chudleigh had reached 49-4 but this soon became 49-5 as Degg picked up a skier at mid-off of Carter. Carter finished with 12-4-18-2. Heath (12-3-34-4) picked up his fourth wicket to leave the score on 53-6, Coleman picking up a catch at cover.
Chudleigh number nine S Newland shepharded the tail in for a well played 31 in a partnership of 43 for the ninth wicket before top edging a sweep of Taylor to give debutant Croymosan his fifth catch behind. Veterans M Trout and D Williams took the final score to 121-9.
Yelverton started their reply in confident fashion led by skipper Degg and Taylor before Taylor was caught by Heather at slip. Rain and bad light ended the game with 22 overs left to play. Yelverton seconds (10 points) v Chudleigh (8pts) — match abandoned.
