Tavistock Squash Seconds 4 China Fleet 1 TAVISTOCK Squash second team continues its unbeaten run of matches. On Monday, the team played Travel Bug at Fort Stamford in the Companies League Cup and won 4-1. Both Robin Burdfield and newcomer Richard Bache were excellent, showing the determination and skill needed to win tough matches against fast opponents. On Thursday, the team travelled to China Fleet Club. Tavistock fielded their strongest team with Rob Giddens in good form, Dave Ruffell playing at his best this season and captain Mike Gray playing with grit and style. Veterans Malcolm Horton and Pete Walshe are both unbeaten this season. The first match was between Pete Walshe and Steve from China Fleet. Steve was quick around the court with a range of useful shots, but Pete settled down quickly to his task and won his match 3-0, with scores 9-3, 9-7, 9-4. The second match between Malcolm Horton and Chad from China Fleet was hard work. Malcolm was giving away some 40 years in age, but not in experience. Chad continued to maintain pressure on Malcolm and won in straight games 3-0, with scores 9-7, 9-6, 9-7. Malcolm's unbeaten run has sadly come to an end. The third match was between Mike Gray and Trevor with Mike romping home with scores 9-2, 9-4, 9-6. In the fourth match between Dave Ruffell and Karl, Dave started with great determination and won his first game 9-2 but lost 9-3 in the next. Dave was able to dominate with a range of clever drops and cross-court shots to take the third game 9-0 and the fourth 9-5. Playing at number 1, Rob Giddens is a skilful and controlled player with an array of tricky shots which he uses to great effect. He moves quickly around the court, putting himself into a position to maximise the effect of his returns. His opponent Steve was a quick runner, but lacked Rob's touch and control. Rob gave Steve no opportunity to enter the game, and won 3-0, with scores 9-2, 9-2, 9-4. Anyone wanting to play squash should come along to the club, off Pixon Lane, on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and join in with players having a range of skills and abilities.
