OPMs II XV 14

Okehampton II XV 54

AT a sun-drenched Elburton Okehampton consolidated their position at the top of Devon Merit table II with another emphatic victory.

It took the visitors fewer than five minutes to open the scoring when, following a short-range scrum, flanker Alex Taylor slipped through the attempted tackles of a number of defenders to score near the posts. Buzz Brimacombe added the extras followed shortly afterwards by a penalty to give Okehampton a 10-0 lead.

Centre Tom Robinson was next to cross the whitewash, following good work by fellow centre Pete Herrod-Taylor, and the signs were looking good for a big win. However, a moment of madness from a quickly taken lineout led to the ball going directly to an OPMs player in full flight. He had the simple task of catching the ball and running unopposed under the posts to bring the score back to 15-7.

Another Brimacombe penalty and another Robinson converted try before the interval gave Okehampton a 25-7 lead.

In the second period further tries from Brimacombe, Phil Jones, John Stevens who was having a barn-storming game, Captain Simon Griffiths and a third for Robinson saw the final score reach 54-14.

This week the side faces Callington in a friendly. Kick-off is at 3pm at Oaklands Park.
