A VACANCY has arisen on Okehampton Town Council.

The position fell vacant because of the departure for health reasons of Cllr Hydar Ali Pirwany.

Mr Pirwany, who was on the council for ten and a half years, said he had fond memories of the town council: 'When I was on the council we went through some very landmark decisions.

'It was good to be consulted on the problems in the area and very good working in partnership with fellow councillors.

'We all support each other — a good thing about Okehampton Town Council is there are no party groups.'

Mr Pirwany said he wished whoever is successful the best of luck: 'I hope he or she has as good a time as I have on the council.'

The council is this week advertising for anyone who is interested to put their name forward.

Applicants will then be considered by the town council. However, if ten or more electors request an election, then a by-election will be held.

Applicants must be over 18 and live locally. A keen interest in Okehampton and experience of public working experience is also essential.

To apply, phone town clerk Don Bent on 01837 53179.
