BERE Scout Troop celebrated a very successful year in the 2008/2009 district scout troop competitions.
The troop won the district backwoods competition in May 2008. This competition is a survival weekend, when the scouts work in pairs, building shelters, sleeping in them and preparing and cooking their food with only a tin mug and a knife as utensils.
The district rose bowl competition was won by Bere Alston Scouts in June 2008. This event is a camping competition, involving a group of six scouts working together for a weekend, and showing off their camping skills, preparing their menu and food and cooking it, layout and erecting their camp site, with various camping activities included during the weekend.
The R F Moor competition was won by Bere Alston for the first time. This competition is held on Dartmoor, where the scouts navigate to bases with an incident or a challenge to complete, and are marked on various aspects of the day.
The district raft race at Roadford Lake in July last year was won by Bere Alston scouts for the first time.
In this competition, the scouts are marked on their building skills, creating a traditional raft with barrels, spars and ropes and then paddling their raft to a marker and back in as fast a time as possible.
The district scout swimming competition was held at Meadowlands in November 2009 when Bere Alston came third to the winners, Whitchurch Scout Troop.
Bere Alston Scouts, having won four of the five district competitions, had a very successful season, with Andy Jerrett and Adrian Helps as section leaders and Paul Hughes as group scout leader.
