EXPLORER Scouts and Scout Network members from Okehampton will be travelling to Iceland this summer for two major events. Young scouts attending the events include brother and sister Kate and Oliver Charlton from Inwardleigh, who will both be taking part in the Explorer Belt expedition. The Explorer Belt is a scouting award for members aged 16 to 25-years old. To achieve the award groups must plan and carry out a ten-day expedition across a foreign country. The aim is to get closer to the people, culture and customs of the country rather than complete a wilderness trek. Ellen Cook, fundraising co-ordinator, said: 'This is a brilliant opportunity for them to explore a new country and bring what they learn back with them, as while they are out there they will be meeting with other scout groups.' Other young scouts from the group will either be taking part in the expedition or the National Icelandic Jamboree. The jamboree will see 21 scouts and four leaders in Hamrar Akureyri in the North of Iceland, under the theme of the 'Jamboree is on a Viking Trail'. Flights and places have been booked and now the group is busy planning and fundraising to get the trip underway. The cost of the trip per person is £750 and this will be met by fundraising, including a bag pack and sponsored climb, funding bids such as the Youth Opportunities Fund and corporate sponsorship. In order for their adventure dreams to become reality they are hoping for sponsorship from local residents or businesses.
