Devon Intermediate Cup third round

Lamerton 4

Plymouth Rangers 3

LAMERTON progressed into the quarter-finals after a remarkable fightback against a skillful and well organised side.

Things began brightly for Lamerton with Paul Cowling and Steve Wickett proving to be a handful up front but Rutherford in the away goal was in inspirational form.

Against the run of play Rangers went in front through James Dawe who scored from close range but it gave the visitors confidence and they began to dominate. They went two up from a Jeffrey free kick and the score remained at that at half time with Rutherford saving excellently from Cowling just before the interval.

After the break Rangers made it three from a good move finished by by Rutherford and it looked curtains for Lamerton.

But they bounced back when Wickett cut in from the left and hit the underside of the bar with Cowling poking the ball home.

Five minutes later Cowling was brought down and Wickett converted the penalty.

For the first time in the match Lamerton began to dominate midfield and with 15 minutes left Tony Jones scored direct from an inswinging corner.

It was end to end action and Pete Daniel pulled off a brilliant save from a Rangers header to keep Lamerton in the match.

With extra time looming, in the 90th minute Cowling broke down the right wing and squared the ball back for Paul Breyley to score with a spectacular scissor-kick to cap a great comeback.

This Saturday away in the league to Harlyn, kick-off 2.30pm.
