WHITCHURCH Wayfarers Cricket Club recently hosted the 2006 Junior School Cricket Tournament ? so popular the games had to be spread over two days. Group A consisted of six local schools and on Tuesday, June 20 the tournament got underway. St Peter?s A, Milton Abbot and Kelly Prep all played some exciting cricket. It soon turned into a two school race for 1st place after Kelly prep were beaten by a very strong Milton Abbot team. St Peter?s A still had to play Milton Abbot which would prove to be the deciding match as both teams up to that point were un-beaten. Again the strength of Milton Abbot was too much for St Peter?s A. Milton Abbot went into their last match of 5 knowing that a win would see them to the title. This was never in doubt after playing a spirited Tavistock County Primary School in their final match, but proved far too strong for them and the 4 other schools before them. Milton Abbot was presented with a shield trophy for coming 1st place in Group A. On Friday the second half of the tournament got underway. The cricket played in group B was a lot closer than in group A. Three of the teams St Peter?s B, Buckland St Andrew?s and Bickleigh Down school all went into the last game knowing they could win the group if results went their way. Horrabridge also put in a spirited display narrowly missing out on being part of the exciting conclusion. St Peter?s B beat their opponents meaning the result of the match between St Andrew?s and Bickleigh Down would decide the group winners. In the end Bickleigh Down were just too strong for St Andrew?s taking the extra points meaning the Group B shield was lifted by the South Hams school. The fixture list also proved exciting for the other last match being played between Bere Alston B and Whitchurch B. Neither school had won any of their games so both teams were keen for a win. In a closely played match Whitchurch B took the game during the last over and got themselves a win. The trophies won by Milton Abbot and Bickleigh Down were for the highest points scored during the course of the day. There was also the Fair Play Trophy to be presented to the team that showed the most sportsmanship through out the tournament. In the end it was decided that Bere Alston outshone the other schools showing real team spirit and sportsmanship to all involved, they were awarded with a glass plaque. Whitchurch Wayfarers thanked all the schools taking part for making the tournament a success.
