A SPONSORED litter collection by a Mary Tavy schoolboy has raised over £100 towards the second phase of improvements to the village recreation field.
Paul Hutchins, who attends Kelly College Junior School, spent his half-term holiday collecting rubbish after seeing just how much litter was scattered around the countryside whilst out riding with his family.
He filled five bags including a case of empty beer bottles and polystyrene boxes and raised £136.30 which was handed to Colin Grice, chairman of the Mary Tavy recreation field improvements committee. Paul's next money raising venture is a charity cross country run from Mary Tavy Church to Brentor Church.
The funds raised will go towards the refurbishment of the tennis courts, changing rooms, multi games area and general enhancement of the field.
Sponsors for phase two include Dartmoor National Park, West Devon Borough Council, Bradford and Bingley and £5,000 from the National Lotteries Charities Board.
The latest fundraising activity is the production of the Mary Tavy and Brentor Millennium calendar with black and white photographs of local pubs, churches, other buildings and local scenes.
The calendar is available from committee secretary Alastair Grindey on 01822 810527, price £3 with free delivery in Tavistock and surrounding villages.
