DESPITE the disappointment at not making the Olympic finals of her shooting events, Okehampton's Georgina Geikie said this week the experience of being at London 2012 had been 'truly amazing and inspiring.'

Gorgs, as she is known, was the only British pistol shooter to qualify for a quota place after her performance at the European Championships in Belgrade last year. She competed in the 10m air pistol and the 25m sport pistol events.

She said she was nervous in her first Olympics and things did not go her way: 'I was a bit unlucky and I was disappointed with my performance but it was a lifetime goal to compete there.

'It was a dream come true to take part and everything that I have learnt will stand me in good stead for all I do in the future. I hope that includes being at the next Olympics in Rio in four years time.'

Gorgs, who will remain at London 2012 till after the closing ceremony next weekend, said she was thrilled to see Peter Wilson win a gold medal in the double trap: 'Being part of Team GB is amazing. I was able to go into the Olympic stadium and watch the athletes. It was great to catch the vibe there, it was the first night Jessica Ennis was competing and it really was quite something.

'Seeing the Great Britain flags everywhere, everyone so happy and ecstatic about the performances and getting behind the sportspeople, it's fantastic. I really hope it does inspire a generation to get into sport.'

The shooting star added that she was really grateful for all the support, both before the games and during by the public, her family and local businesses who had helped her in her quest to compete in the Olympics.
