IT has been a busy time for Okehampton Cycle Club with club members participating in a number of cycling events including time trials, road races and audax.

On a recent ten-mile time trial organised by Tamar Valley Cycle Club on the old A30 from Sourton to the junction for Dingles and back, Steve Sage finished in 21.46, Dave Chowings 24.02 and for Tony Johnston, 25.16, a new personal best.

Club members Mike and Jacky Rice recently took part in the 15.6 mile Sporting Time Trial organised by St Budeaux Cycle Club on the undulating roads of Cornwall from Kelly Bray to Plusha and back.

Last weekend they also took part in the Torplex 200 audax event organised by the CTC Devon DA, a 200km ride starting and finishing at Newton Abbot with a route taking in Dawlish, Exeter, Cullompton, Crediton, Whiddon Down, Moretonhampstead, Princetown, Plympton and Totnes.

Cycling into a stiff headwind across Dartmoor and with a 2,900m climb this was a leg weary 12-hour ride.

The fourth event of the Okehampton Cycle Club summer time trial series took place last Thursday evening. In dry but blustery conditions, an excellent turnout of ten competitors took part in a ride against the clock from Mole Avon to Whiddon Down and back on the old A30.

Brian Dixon again achieved the best time of the night, clocking 29.43, Steve Podd came second with 31.01 and Mike Rice was third with 33.52.

Full results: B Dixon 29.43; S Podd 31.10; M Rice, 33.52; Jacky Rice 34.28; T Johnston 34.33; J Short 35.13; D Mills 35.34; S Perret 36.02; D Baskerville 42.00; D Chowings DNF.

As part of Okehampton's Sports Week, the time trial on Thursday July 11 is an open event for anyone wanting to have a go against the clock. All you need in order to participate is a roadworthy bicycle. If you are interested, the meeting place is Mole Avon car park at 6.30pm ready for a 7pm start.
