Devon Second XI B

Yelverton seconds v Shobrooke Park

Yelverton seconds moved off the foot of the table following a 26 run victory over Shobrooke Park.

Yelverton openers Andy Taylor and Gul Khan put on 46 for the first wicket before Khan was caught for 20 off the bowling of Jolliffe.  Taylor followed in similar fashion for 21, and Gerry Keen came and went for a duck to leave the Bohemians on 65-3 off 20 overs.

Chris Cottrell and Terry Leonard put together a partnership of 55 for the fourth wicket.  Cottrell, hampered by a groin strain during the latter part of his innings required a runner and was well caught by Jolliffe for 31 off the bowling of Shobrooke skipper Mark Goodman.  Leonard went on to make a well played 56 before he was the seventh wicket to fall.  The tail added some lusty blows to take the Bohemians to 168 with the last wicket falling in the 46th over.  Jolliffe (2-21 off 13), Goodman (3-25 off 10) and Steer (4-17) were the main wicket takers.

In reply Shobrooke got off to a slow start thanks to some accurate bowling from 17 year-old Dom Rushton and veteran Tony Carter.  Rushton picked up three wickets in his seven over spell.  Carter (1-34) picked up the fourth wicket with the score on 59, caught by Leonard at slip and on 62 James Worrell (1-19) chipped in with the fifth wicket, well caught by Khan off a skier.  Skipper Chris Pearson struck with his second delivery to leave Park on 68-6 and with seemingly a mountain to climb. U15s Colt Dan Cooper picked up 2-22 from other end thanks to catches by Worrell and Matt Adams to further turn the screw and with the score on 91-8 an early finish seemed likely.

However, the Shobrooke ninth wicket pair of Dave Manning and Mark Goodman struck some lusty blows in a partnership of 47 for the ninth wicket to edge Shobrooke ever nearer to their target.  Left arm slowly Andy Taylor came on and Goodman was dropped behind off his 2nd delivery, but fell lbw in Taylor's next over with the score on 138.  Dom Rushton (4-31 off 10) took the last wicket of Manning who was well caught by U15 Colt Matt Adams at long-on for a feisty 39 as the Shobrooke innings closed on 142.

The game was played in a good spirit and the stand out performances in the field came from the younger players, Dom Rushton, Dan Cooper and Matt Adams.

Yelverton (18 points) beat Shobrooke Park (7 points) by 26 runs,
