HAVING conquered the London Marathon more than once, three Okehampton runners are set to tackle the New York Marathon in November in aid of the Devon Air Ambulance.

Mates Andrew Vallance, Lita Meardon and Brian Friend saw the event on the TV last year and were inspired to have a go.

All three are old hands at the 26-mile London Marathon and the Nottingham Marathon and say the New York equivalent is very similar.

'We have never been to New York before and this marathon is one of the biggest in the world, so we thought we would combine it with a two week holiday to the States,' said Andrew.

A few years ago Andrew, who is a farmer, raised £2,000 for the air ambulance in one marathon run and he is hoping to get somewhere near that total this time, with help from the local community.

Anyone wishing to sponsor the runners can make a donation at Quinns Hairdressers in Okehampton or the Crossways Inn at Follygate.
