The weather was kind to runners in this year?s Tavy Seven road race held on Sunday - this was the 21st staging of this popular and growing event hosted by Tavistock Athletic Club with the 700 places in demand. With more than 250 entering the Fun Run on the day, more than a 1,000 people descended upon Whitchurch Down to witness the race, which is traditionally held on Remembrance Sunday, hence the noon start, but as runners arrived to prepare themselves for the race a minute?s silence was held at 11am. There were no new course records but there was some fine competition. Lee Turner, from Torbay AC, was the overall winner in a time of 39 mins 24 secs. Last year?s winner, Wayne Stephens from Bideford was runner up while Paul Gregg, of Tamar Trotters was third. In the ladies? race Revis Crowle from East Cornwall Harriers came in first (34th overall) in a time of 45 mins 17 secs. Carn runner Donna Jenkin was second and Caroline Steven from Launceston third. More than 250, mainly youngsters, took part in the Fun Run which was a 1.5 mile course across Whitchurch Down. Ben Brown, a Tavistock AC athlete led the field home in fine style. Tavistock athletes were restrained from taking part as their services were utilised to do all the ?behind-the-scenes? work required to stage such a large and prestigious event. At the head of the organising team was Mike Youlden, race director for the third year running. Although he would be first to heap praise on the army of loyal helpers he had at his disposal there is no question that his attention to detail and perseverance has been a critical factor in the growing success of this event. Main sponsors, Mansbridge and Balment, were there in force and had several members of staff taking part in the race. Also supporting the event was Abbey Garden Machinery, sports shop Active Co and Brooks, the running shoe and apparel specialist.
