A 73-year-old man from Bow is aiming to become the oldest person to drive from John O?Groats to Land?s End on a tractor. Ron Moyse wants to enter the Guinness Book of Records with his feat, while raising thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support at the same time. Ron has appealed for donations and support from local people along the epic route. His inspiration for the trip came from his good friend, Bobby Pellow, who died earlier this year after an eight-year battle against cancer. Two years ago, Bobby drove from John O?Groats to Land?s End on his tractor, raising £32,000 for Macmillan and Cancer Research UK, and he challenged Ron to follow suit. In memory of his late friend, Ron will be using the wheels from Bobby?s tractor. Ron said: ?I decided that I simply had to do the trip because of Bobby. And if I can raise anything approaching £32,000 I?m sure there?ll be no-one more delighted than him. ?There is a big bucket on the side of the tractor so that people can simply throw their money in.? Alternatively, they can send cheques c/o Macmillan Cancer Support, Devon Fundraising Office, 95 Torquay Road, Paignton, TQ3 2SE. Ron said every penny raised will go to Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support. Ron set off from John O?Groats last weekend and aims to reach Land?s End on July 2. He will be making the 840-mile journey in a 38-year-old classic tractor from his own collection of more than a dozen old tractors. He hopes that a growing band of other tractor enthusiasts will follow him in Cornwall as he approaches Land?s End. Ron is also hoping to visit many of the one-day agricultural shows in the region on his tractor, either along the way or later in the summer. He is provisionally hoping to be at Okehampton Show on August 10. Calvin Lovelock, Macmillan?s fundraising manager said: ?We are very grateful to Ron and everyone who is supporting him during his epic journey. ?All the money he raises will be used to help fight cancer and make life better for people living with the disease.? Ron is pictured left with the tractor on which he aims to make the marathon charity chug.
