HILARY Davie?s letter (November 13) referred to the Meadows as a lovely place, but in the past sense.
Like Mr Hanford I am a relative newcomer to Tavistock and since the removal of the skateboard facility to the other side of the river, the construction of the tunnel, new paths and general re-seeding of the far end of the Meadows it is again a lovely place, but with the exception of the bandstand.
As a town councillor expressed to me, this is a good example of Victoriana, which should be retained, but with the graffiti and part of the wooden ceiling missing it is indeed an eyesore.
As chairman of Tavistock Area Christians Together I wrote to the council to explore the possibility of it being used next summer for an evening service, hopefully with the Plymouth Salvation Army Band. I was pleased to receive a prompt reply from the town clerk that the council would be ?delighted for this under-used facility? to be used for such an occasion.
One thing I remember particularly as a child was a band in the park, especially on Sunday and only recently on holiday near Bude spent a so enjoyable afternoon with many others listening to their town band playing in their park.
So come on, Tavistock, restore the bandstand to its previous glory so that our town band and other bands can use it next summer for the enjoyment of all.
