A TOP restaurant at Virginstowe is one of a handful in West Devon serving up princely lunches at pauper prices to support Save the Children.

Percy?s Country Hotel is joining forces with the Financial Times to offer customers the finest two course lunch for a modest fee while raising cash for a good cause.

Proprietor Tony Bricknell-Webb, who runs Percy?s with his wife Tina, said they had supported the event ever since its inception ? first in London and then after the couple relocated to Devon.

?It is something we have always done. However it is different this year because it is the first time it will be the Academy Restaurant ? our trainee chefs will be producing the food under the guidance my wife Tina,? he said.

?This marks the official opening of the Academy Restaurant which is the lunchtime operation of Percy?s.?

Andrew Lester, 16, the student chef who has reached the finals in a national British Meat Chef of the Year competition with his special lamb recipe, will be preparing the dish for lunchtime customers.

The first two courses cost £15 and people are invited to place donations for Save the Children in envelopes provided.

The charity promotion began on Saturday and will operate until Sunday February 9. It is an innovative scheme that not only serves up top quality food but has already helped raise nearly £0.5m for Save the Children.

l Other top restaurants in West Devon taking part are Lewtrenchard Manor, Lewdown; Horn of Plenty, Gulworthy and the Arundell Arms, Lifton.
